Description

A hearty and comforting one-pot meal featuring ground beef and tender potatoes, seasoned with aromatic spices and cooked together for a flavorful, easy-to-make dinner that's perfect for busy weeknights.

Ingredients

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 ½ lb ground beef
  • 1 lb potatoes, diced (peel if you prefer)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Spices and Seasonings

  • 2 tsp paprika
  • ¼ tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • Salt & black pepper, to taste

Other Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup water or beef broth
  • Fresh parsley or green onions, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Brown the Ground Beef: Heat a large skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat. Add half the butter, then add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks to ensure even cooking and no large clumps remain.
  2. Season the Beef: Season the browned beef with salt, black pepper, dried thyme, oregano, cumin, and paprika. Mix well and then transfer the beef to a bowl; set aside to keep warm.
  3. Sauté the Onion and Garlic: In the same pan, add the remaining butter and the diced onion. Cook over medium heat until the onion softens, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute, releasing the aromatic flavors.
  4. Cook the Potatoes: Add the diced potatoes to the pan and cook for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring occasionally until the potatoes start to turn golden and become slightly tender. Cover the pan with a lid during this time to speed up the cooking process.
  5. Add Liquid and Simmer: Pour in the cup of water or beef broth. Stir to combine, then cover the pan and let everything simmer for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the potatoes are fully tender and cooked through.
  6. Combine Beef and Potatoes: Return the cooked ground beef to the skillet with the potatoes. Stir well and cook together for another 4 minutes over medium heat to blend the flavors and warm everything through.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Remove from heat and garnish with fresh parsley or chopped green onions. Serve hot on its own, or accompany with a simple salad or crusty bread for a complete meal.

Notes

  • Peeling the potatoes is optional based on your texture preference.
  • Use beef broth instead of water for extra depth of flavor.
  • Covering the pan while cooking potatoes helps them cook faster by trapping steam.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste before serving.
  • This dish pairs well with a fresh green salad or crusty bread.
  • For a lower-fat option, drain excess beef fat after browning.
